Different Lonesome

We are honoured to be amongst a number of musicians that will come together on Saturday the 13th May to perform a special tribute concert for the late Gavin JD Munro, who was the songwriter and lead singer of successful americana outfit, Red Pine Timber Co. . . . or Red Pine as they were widely known. Both our fiddler, David Macfarlane (Dave), and our bassist, Chris Small, were members of the band between 2010 and 2022 and we bumped into Gav a great deal over those years, particularly at Montrose Music Festival; we also recorded our recent album, Listen, at Clearwater Studios in Perth, which Gav started to both pursue his love of music and provide mentorship to up and coming musicians from his locality and beyond . . . he would pop in and out when we were there and was always hugely supportive of our music. The studio has since been left in Dave's very capable hands. We are also fortunate to know many of the band's other members through our long relationship with The Twa Tams venue in Perth; this really has affected a number of people as Gav was a massive part of cultivating the thriving music scene Perth still boasts today.

Different Lonesome: The Songs of Gavin JD Munro will celebrate the rich legacy of Munro’s music that spans three decades. A gifted songwriter, he was a key influence in both the Perthshire and wider Scottish music scene; as well as performing in bands such as Red Bus, Raindogs and Wolftrain then becoming the frontman for Southpaw and, subsequently, Red Pine Timber Co., he was also the founder of Clearwater Studios as well as a mentor, teacher and open mic host. Compered by Bruce Fummey, the evening will feature members of Red Pine Timber Co. from 2010 to 2022 including Dave MacFarlane, Chris Small, Dave Shaw, Ivan Sveda, Thom Bubb, Aaron Brake, Michael McNab, Stew Methven, Felix Milan and Neil Ewan. They will be joined by Gavin’s former band mates and fellow musicians including Donny McGelligot, Ian Hutcheson, Owen Nicholson, Callum Campbell, Malcolm Swan, Stuart Nisbett, Ali Pibworth, John Martin and John Ramsay; Blue Rose Code and, as we mentioned, ourselves will be also be performing on the night.

Covering thirty years of creative song writing, the evening’s playlist will showcase the wide breadth of Gavin’s talents taking songs from the Red Pine albums Different Lonesome and Sorry For The Good Times, Southpaw album Buffalo Mansion and Stop The Time EP as well as other specially chosen tracks recorded throughout his career. Gavin shaped Red Pine Timber Co. into a uniquely powerful and popular live band and this very special evening will feature songs from every period of his creative life. The response from fellow musicians is testament to Gavin’s decades long commitment to the music community. Gavin was passionate about helping young musicians and in fact, Longstay, a young band that Gavin mentored, encouraged, and produced will be performing ‘If You Want To’, a song written by Neil McNamara and Gavin nearly thirty two years ago, on the night.

Ticket sales will raise funds for two charities; Help Musicians and Andy’s Man Club and they will both be raising awareness of their services as well as fundraising on the night. Help Musicians offers a lifetime of support to musicians at all stages of their lives and careers including career development, mental and physical health matters and financial challenges. Gavin struggled with mental health issues throughout his adult life culminating in his tragic suicide at the age of fifty six. Andy’s Man Club is a vital resource for many men and one that Gavin supported at various times in his life.
